Bhumba Droksang
Born in Amdo, Tibet, in Western China, Bhumba first discovered the benefits of trade at the age of fifteen, when he purchased Indian-made jewelry on consignment and set off for Beijing and Shanghai to sell it. Four months later, he had made enough profit to help support his family and to invest in a truckload of textiles.
Trade by trade, he gradually built a thriving business by identifying market needs and meeting them with goods that were not available locally.
Over time, Bhumba saw his deep appreciation for Tibetan culture grow into a commercial asset. His business expanded throughout China and, eventually, to United States, where he opened a highly successful retail gallery located near Wesleyan University in Connecticut. When Bhumba decided to close Little Tibet in 2010, the Hartford Courant reported that “the closure will be a big loss for the neighborhood and the city.”
